Recycle Every Day ~ stART

This week we have been talking about Earth Day and ways that we can help do good things for the Earth.  Emily and Juliette  really enjoyed Recycle Every Day!, by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace.  This is a great story about a little bunny, Minna who needs to make aposter about recycling for school.  She wants her poster to be picked to be in the Community Recycling Calendar.  Her family helps her learn about the different things that they do to recycle each day of the week.  Finally, she is inspired to create her poster. 

I loved the theme of this book, because all of the different ways that Minna and her family recycled are things we can and in many cases already to in our home.  Emily liked seeing the bottle returns since we just recently took a huge bag to our recycling center.  We also use our tote bags when we go food shopping.  

I also love the illustrations in this book the last page has a list of the different recycled papers and materials that are used throughout the book.  We are working on collecting them so that we can use them to make our own pictures.

For today’s project we made a Puffy Paint Earth Day craft.  I got the idea for this project on Pinterest from Itsy Bitsy Learners.

These were fun and easy to make, first I cute out the hearts for the girls, then the girls traced and cut out their handprints.  Emily traced hers and Juliette cut out one while I cut out the real ones (she likes to just cute everything into really small pieces, but it was still good practice in using the scissors!)

Next I gave them each a paper plate and some green and blue homemade puff paint.  First they painted the green on to look like the land and I microwaved it to make it puff up.  Then they painted the blue for the water and I microwaved it to make it dry and puff up.

Finally they glued on the hands and heart to show that they love the Earth.  This was a fun project and looks so cute hanging up for Earth Day!

This week in celebration of Earth Day we read Fancy Nancy: Every Day Is Earth Day, by Jane O’Connor.  This is a cute book that gives wonderful examples of things that children and their families can do to help protect the environment.  However, when Nancy goes a little overboard she also learns how she can respect her family while still taking care of the earth.  When I was little I was always trying to find ways to “Save the Earth”  in fact I even belong to the “Save the Earth Club in middle school.  So this is something that I am happy to share with Emily.  The ideas in this book are fun and I know Emily is excited to try some of them out.

We decided to make some Earth Cookies for Earth Day after reading this book.  We painted our sweet canvas with some green and blue homemade edible water color paint. 

I mixed the dough for the sugar cookies and let it chill in the refrigerator while the girls were actually napping at the same time.  When Emily woke up we rolled half of it out and she cut them into circles.  She decided she wanted to make large and small earths.

After they were baked and cooled for a bit Emily painted the cookies with green and blue watercolor paints (just plain old water and food coloring).

It's almost Earth Day!!

Emily's Earth

I have been thinking about what we were going to do to celebrate Earth Day this week and when I saw this project on Superheroes and Princesses I knew Emily would have a lot of fun doing it!

I changed it a little since it was a rainy day here I decided to let the rain make the markers run and Emily used star stickers because she LOVES putting stickers on things.

We put it outside on the patio table and waited for the rain make the colors run.

When it was dry Emily glued her earth to a piece of black construction paper.

She added star stickers to finish her project.
