Tic-Tac-Toe with an Egg Carton and Plastic Easter Eggs

My girls love playing Tic-Tac-Toe!!  It is definitely a stand by waiting game for restaurants, waiting in Dr. Offices or in the car or just for fun at home.  We usually play with paper and pencil or as on a board that came with a set of princess games.  The other day though as I used the last egg in a carton of 18 eggs I realized that if I cut it up it would make the perfect Tic-Tac-Toe board.

Egg Carton Tic Tac Toe

So after a little cutting I gathered up some of our plastic colored Easter Eggs and showed our new Tic-Tac-Toe board to the girls.Egg Carton Tic Tac ToeEgg Carton Tic Tac Toe

I played a couple of rounds with each of the girls.  It was different to have to place the egg into the container than to draw and X or an O, which made it a fun twist.

The girls also had a great time playing against each other!

Egg Carton Tic Tac Toe This was a fun new way to play and a great way to recycle our old egg carton!

Having Fun Learning

Having Fun Learning Together This Week!!!

Emily is 4.5 years old and Juliette is 27months old

Emily and Juliette are really enjoying helping me watch their cousin who is 12 weeks old.  He fits right in with them and both Emily and Juliette look forward to having him come over.  The girls have been keeping busy with lots of different activities while I am with the baby.  They play nicely together and so far it has been working out really well.

The girls liked coloring in a different spot.  I let them bring their papers and markers onto the floor in the living room, the change of location made this activity a little different and they thought it was fun.IMG_0447

Juliette has enjoyed having some quiet time in her room, when I went to check on her she was quietly “reading” her books.  I often find this bookcase completely empty after she has “read” through all of them and left them in a huge pile on the floor!  She is such little bookworm, just like Emily :)

Emily enjoyed dressing up her Snap 'N Style Doll and making up stories to go with them.  This doll is getting ready to be in a wedding!IMG_0454 The highlight of  Emily’s week would have to be getting to use the peeler to help me peel carrots for dinner.IMG_0455

The girls with Grandpa playing Sequence for Kids .  This game is a fun strategy game.  Emily loves playing to block other people, she will block them before putting down her own winning piece.

IMG_0459 Emily relaxing on the couch working on her Lauri Toys Dot-2-Dot Lacing Enchanted Kingdom cards.  These are lacing cards that have numbers on them like a connect the dots puzzle.  She has to begin at #1 and lace through to the last number in order.

IMG_0460 Emily found and cut out pictures in a magazine that began with the letter AIMG_0461

Juliette has really enjoyed building with Duplos she has been creating some really great structures.  Usually she just fills the whole board with one layer, now she is building up to make some tall towers.IMG_0464

After making our Water Color Leaves for our stART project the girls had fun exploring with the liquid watercolors and diffuser paper a little more.

Juliette played Perfection .  She requests this game a couple of times a week.  She does it without the timer and then when she is finished we push the board down set the timer and wait for it to pop up.IMG_0510

Juliette is amazing at Zingo , she has been playing this bingo game almost a year now and every time we play I am amazed at how she seems to barely look at her card yet know exactly what she needs and what I need when we play.  Her favorite part is moving the tile dispenser to show the new tiles.

Memory a New Way

Emily and Juliette have been enjoying using our Mickey Mouse Paint Chips, which we got for free from Home Depot to play the traditional version of Memory.  They turn them upside down and pick to cards until they get a match and repeated.
Emily enjoys it, but I wanted to challenge her to something a little different and came up with…
Memory, What’s Missing?
IMG_0298First I put some of the cards out on the floor
IMG_0297  I told Emily to study them and try to remember what was there. Then she closed her eyes and I took one away.IMG_0299
She had to tell me which one was missing.
She did really well and said the yellow one was missing!!
IMG_0300IMG_0301After a few times we added more cards.  This was harder for her and she would get it right part of the time, but she said it was fun and wanted to keep trying.  We took turns taking the card away and figuring out which one was missing.
We also played it with them in straight lines too.
This was a great way to practice paying attention to details and working on memory.  We talked about noticing patterns, for example in the first set there were 2 of each color.  You can do this with any group of toys to go along with anything you are working on or your little one is interested in.  Next time I think I might take out our little people!!

Having Fun Learning

 Tot School

Our week in TOTSchool/Preschool

Emily is 37 months old

Juliette is 8 months old IMG_2625

Emily and her friend went to the Circus!   Both girls really liked the glow in the dark bracelets that my friend got for them from the Dollar Tree instead of buying the over priced light up toys that they sell thereIMG_2635

Emily’s favorite part was seeing the elephants.

IMG_2664

This week we made the letter P for Piano.  I thought that Sarah did a great job putting this together for the Girls.  The finished P’s looked so cute! IMG_2665Emily loves using the bingo dauber.  She used this print out from Confessions of a Homeschooler to make the  letter p.IMG_2666IMG_2667 The girls made Easter Egg Collages.  First they colored an Easter Egg printout, Emily used green since that is her favorite color.  Then they had foam stickers, shiny stickers, ribbon and pom poms to decorate their egg with.  I really liked how this project came out.IMG_2671

We also made Pizza’s for lunch.  These were really yummy and went along really well with our P theme!!

IMG_2673

Emily received the Leap Frog Word Whammer Fridge Phonics for her first birthday.  We have always had it out around the house but the only thing she ever really did with it was push the button to listen to the ABC song (which is actually how she learned to sing her ABC’s)  Since she has been watching Leap Frog - Letter Factory, she is obsessed with letters and has really started to enjoy using the Word Whammer.  She was able to follow the directions to make the words.  Here she is pushing the letters that she put into the correct spots.

IMG_2679

For our stART project we read Good Egg and Emily painted Tin Foil Easter Eggs.

IMG_2682

For some fine motor skills practice I cut up straws and gave them to Emily to thread onto some green lanyard.

IMG_2686

Emily helped me make The Pioneer Woman’s Prune Cake.  She loved sifting the dry ingredients together as well as practicing scooping, pouring and dumping!

IMG_2706

Emily recieved Dr Seuss Super Stretchy ABCsgame for Christmas.  Since she has been doing so well with her letter recognition I thought she would enjoy this game and boy was I right!  We have played this every day this week and she absolutely loves it.

This game is excellent not only for letter recognition but also for following directions.  It is similar to the idea of twister, you have to try to put your hands, feet and even ear to  as many of the letters as you are directed to.  For each one you are able to do you get to keep that letter token.  The winner is the player that has the secret letter at the end of the game.

IMG_2725After art group on Friday we drove out East to visit Emily’s cousin.  My sister-in-law invited us over for lunch and then to go to a bunny program at their local library.  Emily was so excited to get to hold a little bunny.  The woman that came did a fantastic job talking to the children about bunnies.  She also taught them to count in sign language.  Emily was really into it so I think I am going to start trying to teach it to her and Juliette.

Tiny Tot School

Juliette is doing so much recently that I am so excited that I am able to include her in my TOTSchool post!

IMG_2669

Juliette loves other kids, while the girls were working on their projects she was excited to be “playing” with Braeden.

      IMG_2691

I put four of the balls that we had in Juliette’s toy box into this muffin pan.  I moved it around and she watched the balls move in holes.  She enjoyed picking them up and banging them together.

While she was playing I caught some of it on video.

Our favorite books from this week:

  • Little Critter’s Easter ~ Mercer Mayer
  • Good Egg ~ Barney Saltzberg
  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom ~ Bill Martin Jr.
  • Bye-Bye Big Bad Bullybug! ~ Ed Emberley
