Wordless Wednesday ~ The Prospect Park Zoo

We had a fun trip to the prospect park zoo, I loved watching everyone pointing to the animals that they were finding.  I think everyone’s favorite part was the Baboons.  They have a great exhibit at the Prospect Park zoo, and they were running all around playing and chasing each other for the kids to watch!

Field Trip Fun ~ The Queens Zoo

 IMG_8362

We had so much fun spending the day at the Queens Zoo with Grandpa, Uncle Jonathan, Aunt Jayme and Cousin Brianna.  This is a smaller zoo and petting zoo in Flushing Meadows Park.  Best of all with our Zoo membership we can come anytime for free!

The Queens Zoo is much smaller than the Bronx Zoo, but is really perfect for younger children.  The animals are easy to see and it is set up in a nice loop, so as you walk around you don’t really miss anything.

IMG_8265 The first animals we got to see were two crocodiles!!  These were not here when we came in the fall so we were all really excited.

Grandpa brought lots of quarters so that we could get food to feed the ducks! IMG_8271Juliette walks at the perfect speed for Grandpa.

Field Trip Fun ~ The Bronx Zoo

This year we got a membership to the Wildlife Conservation Society, which allows us to visit The Bronx Zoo, 3 other local zoos and the New York Aquarium all year long.  I was so excited about having this membership and couldn’t wait to use it.  For our first trip we planned on visiting the Bronx zoo with our friends.  Emily had a great time seeing all the different animals as well as going on a Bug Carousel and Monorail.  Juliette also had a great day and enjoyed seeing all of the animals too she really liked the children’s zoo, where she was able to feed goats and get really close to the animals!

I printed out an animal hunt sheet from PreKinders for the girls that had a picture and the name of 10 different animals that we might see at the zoo.  After we saw one of the animals the girls put a sticker on the box of the animal they saw.  I was not sure how this would go, but they were both really excited to do this and actually asked us to take the sheets out after they saw an animal that was on the sheet.

  Butterfly Garden

I have never seen so many butterflies in one place and so close to us too!  Emily was most excited when she saw the huge The Very Hungry Caterpillar book cover!!

The Bug Carousel

The Bug Carousel ride was definitely a favorite part of the zoo.  Both Emily and Juliette loved riding on the different bugs!

I loved this part of the tiger exhibit, where we could compare our height to the height of a tiger.

The Monorail

After an extremely long and cranky wait we had a great time on the Monorail.  We were able to see a lot of different animals and sit down and relax for a little bit.

Emily had such a busy day, she was asleep before we even got back to the car!!

stART ~ Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?

Welcome to stART! I hope that you will enjoy our story and art project and maybe even share your own too. All I ask is that you link back to A Mommy’s Adventures so that everyone can see all the other great projects that everyone shares too! The linky will be open all week.

I added a stART tab in my navigation bar to make it easier to search for past stART projects. Be sure to check it out!! All the books that we have read and did a stART project for are listed in alphabetical order.

This week Emily has been talking about the zoo nonstop!  We were supposed to go to the zoo on Sunday, but were unable to go because it ended up raining all day.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will be able to go this weekend.  In preparation for our trip to the zoo we have been reading all of the books we have about the zoo.  So far Emily’s favorite is Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?, by Bill Martin Jr.  This book  uses a fun repetitive and predictable text to introduce children to the different animals that can be found at the zoo and the sounds that they make.  I loved that by the middle of the book Emily was helping me read it!

After reading the book I asked Emily which animal she would want to have in her own zoo.  She picked the peacock, and right away I knew Emily would love to make the pretty peacock pictures that I saw on The Frugal Family Fun Blog.

Once Emily’s picture was finished I knew we had to put her peacock in a cage like at the zoo.  So we used an old styraphone lunch tray and some yarn to make a cage.

Emily glued her peacock picture to the tray

Emily used a blunt tip yarn needle to sew through the holes that I made in the styraphone tray.

I helped her go back and forth into the correct holes, but otherwise she did this on her own.  My mom has been working with her on doing plastic canvas so she is used to sewing.
