stART ~ The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear

Welcome to stART! I hope that you will enjoy our story and art project and maybe even share your own too! The linky will be open all week.

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear

This week we read The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and THE BIG HUNGRY BEAR, by Don and Audrey Wood.  This is one of the books that Emily requests each and every time that we go to the library.  It is a cute story about a little mouse that picks a Red Ripe Strawberry and then tries all different ways of keeping it from the Big Hungry Bear, that happens to LOVE freshly picked red ripe strawberries.  Since Emily enjoys this book so much and it is read very often  I thought it would be the perfect book for our stART project this week!

Emily collaged a lovely Red Ripe Strawberry out of magazine cutouts.

First, Emily and I went through a couple of magazines to find red and green pictures.  I started doing the cutting for her, however when I had to stop in the middle of this to change Juliette, I looked up and saw that Emily had taken over.  This did not last for that long, but I was glad that she gave it a try.

IMG_2297I drew a strawberry shape on a piece of red construction paper and then gave Emily, scissors, glue and the magazine cuttings to collage with.  I was excited to see her cutting the pieces down to fit on just so!!

Next, I drew the leaves of the strawberry on a piece of green construction paper and had her collage that too.

Finally, I cut out both pieces and Emily glued them together.

stART ~ Rabbit’s Pajama Party

Welcome to stART! I hope that you will enjoy our story and art project and maybe even share your own too! The linky will be open all week.

Rabbit's Pajama Party

This week we read Rabbit’s Pajama Party, by Stuart J. Murphy since Emily loves having sleepovers with her cousin.  She loved reading about what Rabbit and his friends did at their sleepover.  This is a cute rhyming book that talks about all of the fun things that happen when Rabbit has a sleep over party.  It is part of the MathStart Series of books and this book focuses on the concept of sequencing.  The book has a clear order of events that makes it very easy for talking about what these friends do first, next and last.

Since Emily is completely obsessed with cutting everything and anything out I really had no choice but to do another cutting activity for stART this week :0)

IMG_0717I printed out a some clip art pictures that went along with some of the events in the story  and Emily got to work cutting them out.IMG_0720

As we read the story I laid out all the pictures that Emily had cut out and I had her figure out which picture matched what we just read about.  After the story she glued them onto a piece of construction paper.

Emily’s finished project.  We were able to use our story collage to retell the story using sequencing words, first, next, then, after that, and finally.

stART ~ Duck on a Bike

Welcome to stART! I hope that you will enjoy our story and art project and maybe even share your own too! The linky will be open all week.

duck on a bike

This week we read Duck on a Bike, by David Shannon.  This is a really cute book about a duck that decides to take a bike for a ride around the farm.  All the animals think duck is silly, but at the end you get to see how they really feel!

Since Emily has been enjoying cutting and coloring I thought it would be fun for her to make Duck on a bike.  I found a duck printable and a bike printable for her to color and cut out.

Emily colored in the bike and the duck.  She used red since the duck road a red bike in the book.

Emily cut out the duck and the bike all by herself.

Emily glued white feathers onto the duck and then glued everything onto a piece of construction paper.

Love Bugs

When I saw this craft  on the PreKinders website I knew we had to make it!  Emily loves her little Love Bug.  Her favorite part is the movable wings.

I am planning on using these for some very special Valentine’s Day cards this year.

IMG_1681

Emily used our new heart punch to make the little purple hearts for the wings.  After a couple she told me I could help too :0)

 IMG_1680

I traced a large circle and a smaller circle onto a piece of red construction paper and another large circle onto a piece of pink construction paper.  Emily cut them all out all by herself!!

IMG_1682

Emily glued the two red circles together to make the body of the bug.

IMG_1683

Next she glued on the wiggly eyes.IMG_1684

IMG_1685I cut the pink circle in half and punched a whole through the top of the two pieces and the center of the body.  Emily put the brad through the holes to attach the wings.  IMG_1686Finally Emily glued the little purple hearts onto the wings of the bug.

I wrote “I LOVE YOU” and the date on the middle.

Scissor Practice

Cutting out Stickers

Emily has been doing such a great job using the scissors to cut strips of construction paper. She likes to cut each strip into the smallest pieces possible. To help her practice cutting in a certain spot I added stickers to the strips of paper and had Emily cut in between them.

She was so excited that she "cut out the sticker" and it was great practice in leading to more purposeful cutting!!

Paper and String Collage

Emily's Adventure with Cutting and Gluing

I gave Emily a chance to use scissors for the first time this week. She got the hang of it almost immediately. We started with string and then tried thin strips of paper which I held for her. Today Emily cut up different colors of scrap paper and then she asked to do string. After all her cutting we glued the pieces onto some construction paper to make a collage. This was great practice in cutting and gluing.

Emily enjoyed dumping all of the cut paper and string onto the glue.
