Right after Christmas we had a huge snow storm and the girls had so much fun playing out in the snow.  We still have a lot of it left so we have also been enjoying all of our snow themed books.  Hello, Snow!, by Wendy Cheyette Lewison is one of the books that we enjoyed the most.  It has a fun rhyming text with cute illustrations depicting many things that happen when it snows.  I think Emily enjoyed it so much because we did many of the things that the book talked about!

For our project Emily made a Snowy Picture Collage

First, we went through some of my magazines and cut out pictures of children in the snow.

Emily glued her pictures on to a piece of blue construction paper.  I gave her a scissor so that she could cut any pictures that she wanted smaller.

IMG_7067

After the pictures were all glued down, Emily used a toothbrush to splatter white paint all over her collage, to make it look like it was covered in snow.  She loved this part and I think the effect was a lot of fun too.

Of course Juliette wants to do everything that Emily does these days so I gave her some pictures to glue onto a piece of paper too.

Then I gave her a q-tip with white paint so that she could dab snow onto her collage.  She had fun with this and covered a good amount of the paper, before she decided to see what the paint tasted like and I had to take it all away.

This week I took our large collection of Christmas books out and we have been enjoying reading them together.  Both Emily and Juliette liked lifting the flaps in Peek-a-Boo Christmas!, by Marie Torres Cimarusti.  This is the same author as Peek-a-Moo! one of our favorite story time lift the flap books.  In this fun Christmas book you have to guess which Christmas character is hiding behind each flap.  At the end Emily asked where the angle was.  I said there was not one in this book but we could make our own Peek-a-boo Angel.  So that is what we did for our project.

 IMG_6314

Emily said she wanted a pink Angel so I cut one large triangle and 2 smaller ones out of pink construction paper for the body and 2 arms.  Then I cut a large circle and 2 smaller ones out of white for the head and hands and finally a yellow oval for the halo.

IMG_6316

Emily glued the Angel together leaving the ends of the arms un-glued.

IMG_6317

She added a face with a marker.  When she was all finished she decided that her Angel needed legs too.

She folded the arms up over the face…

This week we read A Day at the Apple Orchard, by Megan Faulkner and Adam Krawesky.  This is a great book that describes a child's trip to an apple orchard.  Emily was excited to see all the photographs and to talk about when we went apple picking last year with her little cousin.  I loved all the information that this book shared in a fun way.  At first I thought that it would be boring for her, but it actually held her attention as we discussed the information I read and things that were going on in the photographs.

After reading this book we made some cute apple sun catchers.  All you need is a clear plastic lid, paint brush, watered down glue, green craft foam and a brown pipe cleaner.  Apple SuncatcherFirst, I punched a hole in the top of a clear plastic lid, then Emily glued red tissue paper on to the lid.  Once all the glue was dry she threaded a brown pipe cleaner through the hole in the lid and a green leaf that I cut out of craft foam.  To finish it she twisted the pipe cleaner together to make it look like a stem.

Emily was very proud of her finished sun catcher!!

This week while we were at the library looking for books, Emily requested Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  It was already taken out by someone else, but I found Chicka Chicka 123,  by Mill Martin Jr. instead and Emily said we could give it a try!  This turned out to be a cute book that is the sequel to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom except in this book the Numbers go up an Apple Tree.

For our stART project we made a Handprint Apple Tree and Emily glued on numbers that I made using my Numbers Paper Punch  Set.   IMG_5092

We read the book the day before and that night I gathered up all the supplies and had them ready for Emily.  She was so excited to see everything set up for the project!  I am definitely going to try to do it this way more often.

IMG_5095I traced Emily’s hands onto green foam and cut them out for her.  She tried to but it was harder to cut the foam than paper and she asked me to do if for her. IMG_5096

Emily cut out a trunk for her tree out of brown construction paper. IMG_5097

Then she glued it on to a piece of blue construction  paper. IMG_5099Next, she glued her green foam hands to the top of the tree for the leaves. IMG_5100

Emily loved adding the red, green and yellow dot stickers onto the tree for the apples. IMG_5102

Finally she added on the numbers.  he looked through the pile to pick out the number that she wanted.  She spent a good amount of time filling the tree with numbers.  At one point she even asked me for the book so she could see where she should put them.

Toilet Paper Tube Apple Tree

Emily’s Apple Tree

IMG_5090

With back to school just around the corner and the weather getting a little cooler and back to school time I can’t help but think about fall and everything APPLES!!

This was a fun project that used up some of the toilet paper tubes and paper towel rolls that I have been hoarding for a while.  I did this with our Art Group and all of the girls seemed to enjoy working on this project.

Before we got started, I cut slits on both sides of the top of the toilet paper tube and cut out a cloud shape from a piece of poster board.

IMG_5050 First, Emily used brown paint to sponge paint the toilet paper tube brown for the truck of the tree.

IMG_5051

Next, she sponge painted both sides of the cloud shape poster board green for the leaves of the tree.

IMG_5053

Finally, after all the paint was dry she scrunched up pieces of red streamers into little balls and glued them onto the green leaves for the apples on the tree.

I helped her slide the top of the tree into the slits in the toilet paper tube to make the Apple Tree.

This week we read A House for Hermit Crab, by Eric Carle.  I remember reading this story with the first graders as we prepared them for the new adventures that second grade would bring.  Emily enjoyed seeing all of the different see creatures that helped make the hermit crabs shell special.

After reading this book I knew Emily would love to to decorate her own hermit crab and shell so I gave her this template for the hermit crab and shell, markers, glue, sequins and tissue paper and let her go to work.  She knew exactly what she wanted to do and only wanted my help in opening the glue bottle!   IMG_4533IMG_4534 IMG_4535IMG_4536

After Emily finished decorating her hermit crab and shell I cut it out and glued it onto a piece of blue construction paper and sand paper.

Sorting Fun ~ Plants and Animals

Cut and Paste Plant and Animal Picture Sort

Since Spring is here we have been talking a lot about plants.  I saw the idea for this activity on Productive Parenting and have been thinking about doing this with Emily for awhile.  I wanted to print out some pictures of different plants and animals and finally got a chance to get it together.  She loved working on this activity and I am looking forward to making some other ones for her!

IMG_3164

First, I printed out the Plant and Animal Pictures (click to download the one I made) and then Emily got to work cutting each one out.  As she was working on it we talked about each picture.  She was very excited to see the strawberry plant, since she can’t wait for ours to grow and the cat since she loves Aunt Jayme and Uncle Jonathan’s cat JayJ.

 IMG_3165

Emily glued the pictures onto a piece of construction paper that I labeled for her.

IMG_3191

Emily’s finished project.

She did all the cutting, gluing and sorting all by herself.  Now I can’t wait to put together another cut and sort activity for her :0)

Color Wheel ~ Purple

IMG_2567
This week we completed our color wheels.  I really enjoyed watching the kids working on this project.  I also think it will be a great tool to use with future color projects.  The kids seemed to enjoy making them too which is always a good thing!
IMG_2561
First they colored the last section in with purple crayons and markers.
IMG_2562IMG_2560
Then they glued on lots of fun purple collage materials. We had purple pipe cleaners, craft foam, felt, Easter grass,  and pom poms.
Purple Paint and Prints
IMG_2569
I gave the girls Red and Blue paint and had them mix it together to make purple then they were able to paint however they wanted!  I enjoy seeing how each child chooses to paint, some love to use their fingers and others enjoy using the brushes and sponges.
    IMG_2563 IMG_2564 IMG_2565
Open Ended painting always seems to be a hit!
