Marshmallow Shapes

Unplugged Project ~ Geometric
This weeks Unplugged Project theme is Geometric. We recently made this really cool Geodesic dome for Emily to play with out of newspaper, but I wanted to try something different with Emily for this week. Then I remembered making these marshmallow sculptures when I was in school and thought it might be fun for Emily to try making some shapes with the marshmallows and toothpicks.

First, I made a triangle to show Emily how the marshmallows and toothpicks worked. She was very excited to try making one of her own.
She did a great job copying my triangle. While she was working on that I made a square for her to try copying too.

After the square I showed her a cube and a rectangle and then let her make whatever she wanted. She made a really long line that she called a train. I was excited that she referred to it as a line first!! She was very proud of her creation.

It was great for teaching the shapes, but Emily definitely enjoyed this project the most when she was able to create whatever she wanted. I look forward to trying this again as she gets older!

I was thinking of trying the marshmallows and toothpicks too - I've seen it on The Wonder Years blog. Emily did great. I am very impressed how you manage to do so much with her while taking care of an infant.

We haven't done this in a while. I'll have to try it again.

Wow, this is great! I read about the dome, too, and I think we're going to do it up north this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration.

I should totally try this with Connor! Great way to use up some mini marshmallows weve had for awhile now too!

What a fun activity! Did you let her eat any marshmallows? They look so tasty! I'm always amazed at how big these sculptures can get if you really want to go crazy. :-)

This looks like a lot of fun! I think my kids would probably eat more than they build though. It would be a fun way to teach about molecules (for older kids obviously). I love the geodesic dome too!
