Letter and Number Sticker Matching

This is a simple activity to put together that helped Juliette recognize uppercase and lowercase letters.

First, I wrote all the letters of the alphabet in capitals on colored dot stickers. Then I wrote the lowercase letters on a plain piece of paper. I did these in a random order so Juliette really had to hunt for them. Finally, she used the stickers to cover the letter matches.

This was the perfect activity for my sticker loving preschooler!!! After she finished she said "another one, another one!!"

So next we did this with numbers and dots. She practiced counting the dots and covering them with the matching number.

This week we read Ten Black Dots, by Donald Crews.  Emily enjoyed reading this book at school and at home.  This is a great picture book that shows the many different things that different amounts of black dots can become.  The rhyming text is fun to read and the girls loved seeing all of the different things that the dots became on each page.

To go along with this book Emily picked a number of black dots and then imagined what they could be.  Then she glued the black dots on the paper and used them as part of her picture.IMG_2018

Emily decided that four black dots can be the wheels on a car.

Read and Stamp

Emily is so excited that she is starting to read so I thought that she would have a lot of fun with this read and stamp activity.

My dad found this Melissa & Doug Baby Farm Animals Stamp Set at our Church’s White Elephant Sale last year for a really great price.  I tucked it away and thought it would be the perfect thing to use for this activity.

IMG_0065 I folded a piece of white paper to make 8 even spaces.  At the top of each box I wrote the directions.  For example, I see 4 red pigs.

  IMG_0061First, Emily read the directions.

IMG_0060  Then she used the animal stamps to fill in the boxes.

Emily was so careful to pick the right stamp, the right color and to count as she was stamping the animals throughout this whole activity.  She did this whole activity on her own.  When she had trouble with any of the names of the animals she looked at the stamps that she did not use yet and made the sound of the first letter of the name to help her figure it out.

This activity can also be done with farm animal stickers.  I just noticed that I have a set in my sticker box, so I might try it another day that way!

This week while we were at the library looking for books, Emily requested Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  It was already taken out by someone else, but I found Chicka Chicka 123,  by Mill Martin Jr. instead and Emily said we could give it a try!  This turned out to be a cute book that is the sequel to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom except in this book the Numbers go up an Apple Tree.

For our stART project we made a Handprint Apple Tree and Emily glued on numbers that I made using my Numbers Paper Punch  Set.   IMG_5092

We read the book the day before and that night I gathered up all the supplies and had them ready for Emily.  She was so excited to see everything set up for the project!  I am definitely going to try to do it this way more often.

IMG_5095I traced Emily’s hands onto green foam and cut them out for her.  She tried to but it was harder to cut the foam than paper and she asked me to do if for her. IMG_5096

Emily cut out a trunk for her tree out of brown construction paper. IMG_5097

Then she glued it on to a piece of blue construction  paper. IMG_5099Next, she glued her green foam hands to the top of the tree for the leaves. IMG_5100

Emily loved adding the red, green and yellow dot stickers onto the tree for the apples. IMG_5102

Finally she added on the numbers.  he looked through the pile to pick out the number that she wanted.  She spent a good amount of time filling the tree with numbers.  At one point she even asked me for the book so she could see where she should put them.

Roll and Color Activity

I first saw the idea for a Roll and Color coloring page on Making Learning Fun.  Emily and I had a great time playing this coloring game while practicing counting and numeral recognition.  The other day Emily wanted a Frog one (since she loves anything and everything green and frogs).  When I couldn’t find one on the site, I decided to make my own.

IMG_3036

Here is how we played our roll and color game:

  • I printed a Frog Roll and Color coloring page for Emily and one for myself.
  • Emily rolled the die, counted the dots and then found that numeral on her coloring page.  Then she colored that section in.  Next, it was my turn (I had fun coloring too, if you like to color you will love this game!!).
  • If you roll a number that you have already colored you miss your turn (Emily did really well with this and did not get upset that she didn’t get to go)
  • The winner is the first to finish coloring all the numbered spots on the coloring page.

This is just one way that we have played this game, but their are so many more possibilities!

If you think of something else or try something else leave a comment and let us know.  I would love to hear your ideas :0)

Color By Number Activity

I came up with this fun twist on the traditional color by number coloring pages. Emily had a great time opening each egg to see what number and color each section of the picture would be.

IMG_2751

To make this activity all you need are 6 colored plastic eggs, craft foam in colors to match the eggs and my color by number bunny printable (click on the link for a free download).

I cut out oval shapes from 6 different colors of craft foam and numbered each one from 1-6. Then I placed them inside each matching colored plastic egg.

IMG_2746Emily took out and egg, opened it up and colored the numbered space on the picture with the corresponding color.

TOTSchool

Tot School

Our week in TOTSchool

Emily is 35 months old

This week Emily has been sick so we spent the week at home. She was tired and spent most off the time resting on the cough, however we did manage to fit in some fun activities and projects when she was feeling up to it.

IMG_1423

Emily enjoyed this fine motor skills practice. I cute pink, red, white and silver pipe cleaners to fit inside an empty onion powder container. She spent a good amount of time filling it, twisting of the lid, emptying it and filling it again. I thought the Valentine’s Day Colored Pipe Cleaners made it all the more fun :0)

IMG_1430

We made a fun Mr. Groundhog puppet to go with a cute Mr. Groundhog song to celebrate Groundhogs Day!

IMG_1566

Aunt Jennifer came over and was coloring with Emily and Juliette was very excited to get in on the fun!

IMG_1481

Emily enjoyed playing with the Valentine’s Day Lacing Hearts that I made for her. This was another fun fine motor skills practice activity.

IMG_1482

I saw these groundhog color by number printable on Our Little Family and Emily LOVED them. They were great for practicing numeral recognition and colors. We also did the Roll and Color Groundhogs Day game too!

IMG_1486

Emily built a Block Maze for the cars and dolls to walk through. Next time I think we need to bring out the Duplos because we ran out of blocks pretty quickly!

IMG_1488

Recently Emily has been really into stamping we played a counting game with this snowflake stamp. We took turns rolling the dice to see how many snowflakes to make. We played until the paper was filled up. We both had fun and it was great counting practice for Emily.

IMG_1498

For our stART project this week we read Pooh Loves You and Emily made a Love Collage. Emily was able to cut out all the pictures without any help. She was very proud of herself and excited to start cutting out her own things now!

IMG_1550

After our family dinner Emily showed Grandpa how to make ice cream with her play-doh ice cream set.

IMG_1552

She also showed everyone how she nurses pink baby! I am so proud of her :0)IMG_1560

Emily has been very interested in her name so when I found this site that lets you make your own dot tracing printable I knew I had to make one with her name, so she can practice writing it. I laminated the printable so that she will be able to reuse it!

Our favorite books from this week:

  • Groundhog Stays Up Late ~ Margery Cuyler
  • Pooh Loves You ~ Fran Posner
  • Bear Shadow ~ Frank Asch
  • Good Night Moon ~ Margret Wise Brown

Muffin Tin Monday

A 1-2-3 Muffin Tin Monday!!

This weeks theme for Muffin Tin Monday was Numbers. We stuck to the numbers 1,2 and 3 for today's lunch. Emily was very excited to have some fresh picked strawberries from our garden for lunch today!

Here's Emily's Muffin Tin

Top Row: #1 Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, 2 Strawberries, #3 Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
Bottom Row: 1 Strawberry, #2 Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, 3 Strawberries

Emily helped by putting the correct number of strawberries in the muffin tin under the Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich. She thought that it was a lot of fun to help put her muffin tin lunch together!

We did a fun 1-2-3 Cookie Cutter Printing project before we had lunch. Emily's favorite part was putting her fingerprints inside each number!!

Cookie Cutter Art

Counting 1-2-3 with Cookie Cutters and Paint!!

I have a great numbers cookie cutter set and have been thinking it would be fun to do number prints for a while now. Today we finally got to test them out!
We just worked with the numbers 1,2 and 3. Although Emily can count to 10 she doesn't recognize the numerals and she only knows the amount for 1 and 2. I thought if we kept it to just a few numbers at first it would be easier for her to understand.

Emily printed with the 1,2 and 3 cookie cutters with black and pink paint.

Emily really wanted to use her fingers so we decided to make fingerprints inside of the numbers. She did a great job with this!

I can't wait do some more as we keep on counting!!
