stART ~ Fidgety Fish

This week we read Fidgety Fish, by Ruth Galloway.  Emily LOVES this book and asks for it all of the time.  It is a cute story about a little fish, Tiddler that just can’t stop moving.  His mother tells him to go out into the sea and use up all of his energy, but to stay away from the big fish.  Tiddler swims all around and sees all the different things in the ocean, jellyfish, starfish, and a great big “cave” to explore.  He swims right in and finds himself trapped in the belly of the big fish.  Just wait and see how he gets out!!

To go along with this book Emily drew a ocean scene on a piece of water color paper with oil pastels and then painted over the whole picture with blue liquid watercolor paint.

I didn’t get any pictures of her working on this project since I was so busy watching her and talking about her picture, I totally forgot to take a picture of her working.  I can’t believe how much her confidence in drawing has improved.  She drew everything in this picture all by herself.  It is one of my favorite pieces of her art yet!

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum

As I have mentioned before we have a membership to our local children’s museum and with that membership we are able to visit other children’s museums for free with their reciprocal program.  So we decided to visit The Brooklyn Children’s Museum one weekend and we had an amazing time there!

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum was the first museum created just for children when it opened in 1899.  Because of its success 300 children’s museums were created around the world.  The museum was recently renovated and boasts an amazing collection of exhibits that celebrate Brooklyn's diverse cultural roots as well as the many  exhibits focusing on nature, science and the arts.

First we visited Neighborhood Nature

First we checked out the touch tank where Emily and Juliette were able to see and even touch different creatures of the sea.

 

There were lots of other exhibits set up teaching about the wildlife native to Brooklyn.

  Juliette loved exploring the giant water table. 

Our Next Stop was the World Brooklyn Exhibit

Brooklyn is a culturally diverse area and we were able to experience and learn about some of these wonderful cultures in the World Brooklyn Exhibit.

Emily was a Lion Dancer for the Chinese New Year

and rode the Vespa outside the Italian Pizza Place

Finally we checked out the Totally Tots section.

Both Emily and Juliette enjoyed this section that was just for children 5 and under.

The Giant Water Table was a favorite for both the girls, they also enjoyed climbing, up and around the other sections exploring musical instruments, puppets and toys.

We had a great time at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum and hope to visit it again soon.  There is still  so much to see and explore!!

stART ~ A House for Hermit Crab

This week we read A House for Hermit Crab, by Eric Carle.  I remember reading this story with the first graders as we prepared them for the new adventures that second grade would bring.  Emily enjoyed seeing all of the different see creatures that helped make the hermit crabs shell special.

After reading this book I knew Emily would love to to decorate her own hermit crab and shell so I gave her this template for the hermit crab and shell, markers, glue, sequins and tissue paper and let her go to work.  She knew exactly what she wanted to do and only wanted my help in opening the glue bottle!  

After Emily finished decorating her hermit crab and shell I cut it out and glued it onto a piece of blue construction paper and sand paper.

This week we read One fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, by Dr. Seuss.  Emily LOVES when we read Dr. Seuss.  We also have the board book version of this book for babies, which we also read with Juliette.  Both girls love moving the little fish beads on the top of the board book.  Emily pointed out all the different colored fish and helped Juliette count them.

I had some really cute foam fish that went really well with this book and when I saw the idea for finger painting on sandpaper at The Shafer Family I knew I had the perfect project.  I actually did the finger painting with our art group and it went over very well, with the exception of on little girl that didn’t want to try it, but loved doing it at home :0)

Sandpaper Oceans

I gave each child white paint and two shades of blue paint  to finger paint with on a sheet of sandpaper (I got the sandpaper at the dollar tree 12 sheets for $1.00!!!)

After the paint dried we glued Emily glued the fish onto the sandpaper.  As she was gluing them she told me that they were all following in a line.  I love when she tells me stories about her art project! Emily’s Finished Sandpaper Ocean 

Unplugged Project ~ Ocean

Emily's Ocean Treasure Keeper

This weeks Unplugged Project theme is Ocean. We will be going on a church retreat in October and it is right on the beach. This year Emily will really enjoy collecting all of the shells and pebbles. When I saw this idea here, I thought that it would be perfect for holding the things she finds while walking on the beach.
First, Emily colored the printout with her really cool Crayola Twistables Crayons!

Then, I gave her some watercolors to color over the crayon.

After it dried I cut out half circles and Emily glued them onto the paper plates.

I stapled around the paper plates, but Emily wanted to give it a try so I took a picture!

She is very proud of her project and can't wait to use it when we go away!
